CUBE 3 Studio’s Nicholas Middleton, RIBA, CEO/ Partner and Adam Wagner AIA, LEED BD+C, EDAC, ACHA, Senior Project Architect, returned from four days at the 2012 HEALTHCARE DESIGN Conference (HDC). Held at the Phoenix Convention Center in Arizona, the event drew a record breaking 3,700 attendees from 30 countries for its ceremonious 10th year. The annual conference is for professionals involved in the design and construction of healthcare facilities and is in association with The Center for Health Design and conjunction with the AIA, ASID, and IFMA-HCC. The conference showcased 150 educational and networking sessions, roundtables, workshops, and facility tours, providing attendee’s opportunities to earn CEUs while learning and discussing current trends and challenges facing healthcare facility design.

“Our attendance at the conference ensures that CUBE 3 Studio keeps the pulse of current trends in health care design,” said Adam Wagner, who was attending for the 6th straight year, “We can also share and showcase innovations we have brought to the design community to improve healthcare architecture on a national level.”

HDC’s impressive audience comprised of executive-level directors, architects, CEOs, designers, and hospital administrators representing 30 countries including Australia, Canada, Egypt, Denmark, and Taiwan. The HDC is a great platform to network and speak one-on-one with international leaders and innovators in the design world.

“Discussing approaches, solving healthcare design problems and collaborating with colleagues is one of the great benefits of this event”, said Wagner.

The conference is an elite venue to discover developing healthcare design trends, insight on where the industry is going, and how public policy is effecting healthcare projections.  CUBE 3 Studio finds this information extremely advantageous for upcoming projects and carefully weaves this knowledge into their design strategies.

CUBE 3 Studio also had a booth display in the architectural showcase gallery. The booth featured an in-depth case study for Elliot at River’s Edge – Ambulatory Care Center in Manchester, NH. The booth showcased the 255,000 square foot facility and gave insight on how unique design challenges were solved with creative solutions. The graphic explained the design approach and how close coordination with the owner and general contractor resulting in a state of the art facility costing only $220 per square foot.  A QR code was available to link attendees to the online interactive case study. You can find it here.

Middleton and Wagner each attended over ten seminars and workshops during the conference, and Wagner also joined fellow American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) members at their annual luncheon. One of the most memorable events was the keynote address by Christopher Downey, RA, an architect, planner and consultant who lost his sight in 2008.  He spoke on how his loss of vision has helped him understand buildings beyond what most can visually see and how architecture can be more engaging as a full body experience using all of the senses.

PORTSMOUTH, NH – Fourteen New Hampshire builders, architects, and homeowners were named the winners of the prestigious 2011 Building New Hampshire Awards. The announcement was made today at an awards breakfast held at the Residence Inn/Portsmouth Harbor Events & Conference Center, New Hampshire’s first LEED-certified hotel and conference facility.

The winning entries were selected in recognition of their work to build, remodel, or retrofit an energy-efficient, high-performance residence or commercial building. The award-winning projects were designed and built to minimize their carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Energy Star-, LEED-, ReGreen-, and National Green Building Standard-certified are considered equally.

“The winners of the 2011 Building New Hampshire Awards are the people to watch,” said Kathy Poggi, principal of Seacoast Ink and producer of the awards program. “With a sense of responsibility, they’re the ones who are producing some of the most innovative, sustainable building and remodeling projects in the Granite State.”

Winning architects and builders in the commercial build category were Pro-Con Inc., Harriman Architects and Engineers, Eckman Construction Co., and Lavallee Brensinger Architects, which took two of the awards—for their design of the Primex Office Complex in Concord, as well as for Pondside III, a student residence facility at Keene State University.

Commercial remodel and retrofit project awards went to Breathe New Hampshire for the energy-efficient revival of its new Manchester facility and to Regeneration Park, for its conversion of the former Edwards Toyota retail automotive showroom on Lafayette Road in Portsmouth into a sustainable, multi-use green office and retail building.

“By spotlighting these progressive members of the New Hampshire building community, it’s our hope that others will follow their leads,” commented Poggi. “Through their commitment, they’re making New Hampshire a more sustainable place in which to live, work, and play.”

#7  The Elliot at Rivers Edge, Manchester, NH

Location, location, location. Sure, the building is easy to look at, but the view (assuming you’re recovering on the right side of the building) is tremendous. Big windows with a view can go a long way to speeding recovery. Add stylish architecture to the mix and you’ve got one of America’s most beautiful hospitals.

Londonderry, NH — Martini Northern provided construction management services for the new, ground-up construction of the 15,000 s/f Elliot Regional Cancer Center. It was constructed immediately adjacent to the Dana Farber/New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology facility in the
Elliot Medical Center complex in Londonderry, previously constructed by Martini Northern.

Now patients needing radiation therapy as part of their cancer regimen have access to the newest therapeutic facilities in New Hampshire. At the heart of the new center is a vault, comprised of massive steelreinforced concrete walls, floor and ceiling to house the latest Trilogy
System Linear Accelerator from Varian Medical Systems. The vault features soothing lighting and the patient’s choice of music, all carefully designed to alleviate patient stress. The reassuring environment feels more like a health spa then a clinical treatment center. Rich wood and stone elements, ample natural light, colorful accent lighting all combine to create a warm and comforting atmosphere. The linear accelerator vault uses wood paneling, soft lighting
and diffused colorful LED ceiling lighting that gently changes colors to help calm anxiety.

In addition to the new linear accelerator, the cancer center features a patient education resource room, large examining rooms, doctor-patient consultation rooms, a private waiting area for patients, an autonomous reception center where patients can check in with a swipe of their ID card, a room for complementary alternative treatments like Reiki and massage, and a video-conferencing center for doctors to hold consultations with physicians at remote locations.
The exterior complements the existing facility with canopies that extend out to greet visitors. Facades of architectural siding and stone provide inviting warmth with expansive glass to enhance natural light. The concourse that connects the Elliot Medical Center and Dana Farber/New Hampshire Oncology-Hematology Center now flows directly into this new treatment area.

This facility was designed and constructed in association with Anagnost Investments as the representative for the Elliot Health System.

CUBE 3 Studio and JSA collaborated on the exterior and interior treatment facilities design respectively.
